Prince George (in Danish; Prins Jørgen) was born on April 2, 1653, at Copenhagen Castle as the third and youngest son of King Frederick III and Queen Sophie Amalie, who was born a princess of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He was raised at the Danish court, where he received a broad education and was prepared for his future as a prince of Denmark.

In 1683, he married Princess Anne, daughter of the Duke of York, the future King James II of England. The marriage was arranged for political reasons but developed into a harmonious and loving relationship. The couple lived in England, where George held a significant role at the English court and in the military. When Anne ascended the English throne in 1702 and thus became Queen of England, Ireland, and Scotland, she appointed her husband as Lord High Admiral of Ireland. Though he never played a dominant role in politics, he remained a loyal supporter of his wife throughout her reign.

Prince George’s marriage to Anne was happy, but their family life was marked by tragedy. Between 1684 and 1700, Anne endured 18 pregnancies, yet only one son, William, Duke of Gloucester, survived infancy. Sadly, he died of smallpox in 1700 at the age of 11. This left Anne and George without an heir, leading to a succession crisis in the English monarchy.

Although not always regarded as a strong leader, George was recognized for his loyalty and modest nature. His health deteriorated in his later years, and he passed away on October 28, 1708, at the age of 55 at Kensington Palace in London.

His death left Anne in deep mourning, and she continued to grieve for him until her own death in 1714.

As the couple left no heirs, their tartan, Royal Stewart, was released for public use after their passing. Today, our band proudly wears this tartan as part of our traditional Scottish uniforms and as a symbol of the royal tie between Denmark and Scotland. Historically reserved for the royal family, this tartan has since gained wider use and remains one of the most recognized Scottish patterns.
